Job Summary: Description of the purpose of the job

The School Counsellor will provide individual , group and classroom-based counselling services to students, as well as support Staff and parents with mental health and behavioural issues of the children/Leaners. 

Key responsibilities:  
● Conduct individual and group counselling sessions with students to address personal, social, emotional, and academic issues 

● Collaborate with teachers and parents to support student learning and development

 ● Administer and interpret assessments to evaluate student behaviour and mental health 

● Develop and implement prevention and intervention programs to address mental health issues, bullying, substance abuse, and other behavioural concerns

 ● Maintain accurate and confidential student records and reports

 ● Provide crisis intervention and support as needed 

● Teach PSPE classroom lessons/wellbeing 

● Organize and Attend professional development and training opportunities to enhance counselling skills and knowledge 

● Classroom Observation and Learner Support as required to observe learner engagement, behaviour, emotional well being and learning dynamics in order to inform counselling interventions and student support plans

 ● Work collaboratively with Teachers to interpret group and classroom observations , identify at risk learners and recommend practical classroom strategies 

● Organize and Attend professional development and training opportunities to enhance counselling skills and knowledge 

● Preventive and Developmental Support , through classroom interactions to inform preventive wellbeing programs of emotional literacy, Stress management and social skills for both students and Staff 

● Support Teachers by providing insight into student needs that affect learning

Educational Requirements: 

● Bachelors Degree in Counselling, Psychology, or a related field

 ● Masters Degree in Counselling or Psychology is an added advantage 

● Certification as a School Counsellor or equivalent

  Related Job experience:

● Minimum of 2 years of experience as a School Counsellor or a related field 

● Experience in individual and group counselling with children and adolescents

 ● Knowledge of mental health and behavioural issues affecting youth

Additional Skills :

  ● Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills

 ● Empathy and ability to build rapport with students, parents, and teachers 

● Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities 

● Ability to work independently and as part of a team 

● Familiarity with computer-based counselling tools and software 

● Understanding of legal and ethical issues related to counselling and mental health services.
